I had the best church experience last night that I've had in a long while:- couldn't wait to get to worship Sunday night and see everyone.
- couldn't wait to hear what E. & J. - our worship leaders - had to share.
Didn't get home until after 9 (worship started at 6) and felt so energized even though I took home the dirty cups to wash. So what happened?
Holy Grounds is becoming/has become a community. Disciples are being made. Those who meet are a variety of people who wouldn't otherwise know/love each other. Last night's group included military people, at least one seminarian, a Georgetown student, a couple former missionary kids, people who work for federal and non-federal jobs. It was great.
Paul Borden said a couple weeks ago that there are two Big Verses that sum up our calling as followers of Jesus:
Make disciples of all nations.
Love God and love neighbor as self.
One is the Great Commission. One is the Great Commandment (and a second is like it.)
Both are in Matthew, so we can assume Matthew was on board with the whole package.
If you ask me, the way we make disciples is by loving God and each other. It's not about personal mentoring as much as it's about modeling radical love in a community. Matt shared an interesting resource about this you can download here.
We share radical love when we know each other and care about each other enough to make sacrifices and become come one with others in the image of Christ. Relational tithes are the "stewardship campaigns" of the future, if you ask me.
But in terms of relationships and faith, there are a couple questions each of us should be able to answer:
Who is discipling me?
and
Who am I discipling?
Maybe I am being fed/taught/discipled by Paul Borden or Ian Mobsby or Bob Massey or Phyllis Tickle. And maybe I am feeding/teaching/discipling my new best friend Police Officer S. (longish story) or someone who reads this blog. But leadership is flattening and it feels more like what Jesus had in mind.
So - who is helping you become a disciple these days? And who are you helping to become a disciple of Jesus?

Any discipling that I might know of happens through my blog and day to day encounters. Discipling me would be my blog friends who aren't heathens. ha ha. Oh yeah, an my mom.
Sometimes my heathen friends teach me more about discipling. You just never know.
You inspired me to write a blog entry about all this called "Spiritual Potluck." Check it out.
