It's Not Too Early to be Thinking Christmas

This could be the best Christmas ever.

It's not even Halloween, of course, although we've seen the bins of pumpkin-shaped Reece's Peanut Butter Cups for weeks now. But it's fairly certain that church staffs are already talking about Advent. Not to mention "Stewardship Season."

A Christmas Crisis looms according to The Washington Post.

And yet a lot of us are like Caleb Huey whom you can meet here. (I tried to embed the video but problems ensued.) We shop because it makes us feel better. And it's weird that we were advised to go shopping after 9-11 to be patriotic and now we have money issues. So does that mean we were too patriotic? Or we just can't be as patriotic today? I don't get economics.

What I do understand is that it's not just about whether or not we can afford to buy each other expensive presents.

Jobs are insecure. Credit is not as readily available. Non-profits are especially anxious. I can see it in the eyes of our church finance people. But maybe this is the thing that will make us desperate enough to turn towards something more eternal than another toy. I like toys - don't get me wrong. But this could be an especially important Christmas for our beloved United States of America.

"It's going to be a different sort of Christmas," I told my 17-year-old son (I'm visiting him for Parents Weekend).
"Mom," he said, "I don't need anything."
Love that kid.
