"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin,
but by the content of their character."
My mother celebrated her 30th birthday that day.
Today would have been her 75th. And so it's a special day in my family history too.
I've spent some time trying to figure out a good way to celebrate my mother's birthday, and for one thing, we'll do what we usually do: eat dessert for dinner at the Carlyle. (Love the chocolate waffle.) But I also decided to treat one of my favorite mothers for lunch.
It's an historic day, and a lot has changed in the past 45 years. But some things never do. Happy Birthday Mom.

oh, how I miss the flourless chocolate waffles at the Carlyle family of restaurants!
Heard a fascinating piece on GMA this moring about the MLK speech. Seems his advisors had urged him to drop the I have a dream segment of the speech. He had used it many times before and they thought it was old and stale. They stayed up late crafting a new ending. But when Dr. King looked out over the sea of faces he opted to give those stirring words to a larger audience. The staffer was horrified - and now admits how wrong his guidance was.
Seems like a message for the church, too. We think we've said the good stuff too many times and that it has become stale. But just maybe people are finally ready to hear.
I knew you would have something special on your blog today. How I still miss my sister!!! This is a great picture and one that I so not have. She was a wonderful, positive influence on all of us. We carry that with us every day, so she live on in our hearts.
I love you... thanks for sharing the picture.
Thia made me smile big, Jan. Thanks.
I'm so glad,Jan,to see a picture of your mother. Clearly she was quite a wonderful woman to have produced a wonderful mother, pastor, and friend such as yourself.
Enjoy the day, I'll be thinking of you.
